Cruelty-Free and Vegan personal care products can be found at a lot of stores. There might not be a lot of options in-store, but thankfully there are a great amount of brands that sell their products online! There are a lot of links in this post and I tried to make sure that they will all open in a new tab so you can pull up as many as you need without losing your place! Side note: the photo is of my cat Havolyn when she was younger. It’s almost Halloween and I didn’t have a photo for this post!
Cruelty-Free products mean that the ingredients AND the finished product are not tested on animals at any time. These products can be made in China but are NOT SOLD in China as they have a law that states all products SOLD in China must be tested on animals. Any brand that sells their products in China are not cruelty-free or vegan.
Vegan products mean that they are cruelty-free but also don’t contain any animal or insect ingredients like shellac, honey, lactose, beeswax, milk, etc.
Sometimes products will have a bunny logo on the back to show they are not tested on animals. Leaping Bunny and PETA both have their own logos to show that products are certified cruelty-free by them. I don’t always trust PETA’s bunny logo just because they aren’t completely reliable, but this does not mean that those brands aren’t cruelty-free and vegan. Always double check with other resources if you are unsure!
I’ve also seen a lot of products that have “not tested on animals”, “finished product not tested on animals”, “against animal testing”, and sometimes they will have little clip art bunnies on them that are not real certifications. These do not mean that this item/brand is cruelty-free/vegan. This was a big mistake when I first became cruelty-free, I was too trusting of companies and ended up with items that were still tested on animals. It’s okay to make mistakes when trying to shop cruelty-free/vegan so don’t feel bad if you accidentally buy something that isn’t. If you can’t return it, you can use it up or donate it/give it to a friend or family member. If I accidentally buy something that isn’t vegan, I always give it to my mom!
Here is a list of cruelty-free brands that I have found at my local Walmart that might also carry vegan products! Your store location may have different products, different ingredients, and different prices so always double check! I will also include some resources at the bottom of this post (so it’s easier to find instead of somewhere in the middle) that I use to make sure products I’m buying are cruelty-free and vegan! I will also link all brands websites so you can see what they have. I hope you enjoy this post and think about what you’re spending your money on and where it comes from! Vote cruelty-free with your purchase! I will also be making a post later about all of the home care items I use like dish soap, cleaning spray, detergent, etc.
Burt’s Bees has face scrubs, cleansers, moisturizers, lip balm, and many more items for the face and body. They have a pomegranate scent shampoo and conditioner as well as a mango scent. I’ve used the pomegranate one before and it worked alright. I don’t think it sudsed up a whole lot but it did smell nice. They have a peppermint and rosemary body wash and a ginger one that both smell lovely and make you feel extra fresh and clean!
Every Man Jack deodorant is a bit pricey at $5.78 but the sandalwood scent smells amazing! Definitely worth a smell if you walk by. My boyfriend bought this and tried it out but he said it felt like it was burning his underarms. I thought he was joking until I seen him stretch and his underarm hairs had been bleached to orange from brown! Buy at your own risk! Every Man Jack has an unscented sensitive shave cream ($5.97), a beard balm in the sandalwood scent ($8.97), and a beard wash in sandalwood for the same price as the balm. This brand has other products like soap and shampoo that are sold online and have recently started a line for women which is sold online and at Whole Foods.
Hello is 100% vegan and has toothpaste, mouthwash, and toothbrushes. My personal favorite is the sensitive toothpaste but I’ve tried most of them and they are all really great! After using the charcoal toothpaste for a few days, my teeth were noticeably brighter. This is my go-to toothpaste brand and I really love their products!
Schmidt’s Naturals is 100% vegan! Bergamot and lime is my favorite scent of their deodorant! The only downside is that the sticks get messy and will either crumble off or will smear onto the side of the packaging and inside of the lid, but you can always wipe it off and put it back on top of the stick. They only sell the sticks at Walmart but they also have it in containers online. The deodorants run about $4.72 at my Walmart. They also make toothpaste that you can buy online. I bought the vanilla chai toothpaste but it doesn’t make my teeth feel as clean as other toothpastes do. On their Instagram they announced that they are going to start selling body wash exclusively at Target.
Tom’s of Maine is cruelty-free, they have toothpaste and mouthwash. Tom’s of Maine apricot scent smells the absolute best! It feels sticky when you apply it but it goes away after a little while. They have a few scents but apricot was my favorite. They have one antiperspirant one that smells very powdery but I remember it working really well! They recently stocked some more antiperspirant deodorants that are woodsy scents. They smell pretty good but they are very strongly scented! I’ve used my boyfriend’s a couple of times but the scent was too overwhelming for me. All are $4.27 each! They also carry toothpastes and mouthwash. I really like the mouthwash but the toothpaste flavors I tried weren’t super “burn your mouth minty” so they were easy to use but might not give you that burning clean feeling when you are done!
Here are a couple of brands that my Walmart used to carry but don’t anymore. I’m not sure if it’s permanent or not. Other locations may still carry these so I will mention them.
Giovanni has a ton of vegan products! I loved their tea tree shampoo and conditioner! I get a lot of buildup on my scalp and sometimes shampoos don’t get in there and clean it well but Giovanni does!
Paul Mitchell used to have a section of hair products at Walmart but were very pricey. I bought a shampoo one time and I liked the smell but did NOT like the product.
Ardell specializes in false eyelashes and eyelash glue but also have products for eyebrows.
Burt’s Bees has a lot of lip products and they finally came out with a full makeup line a while back. I tried one of their mascaras when it first came out. It smelled really good but it irritated my eyes and they would burn like crazy when product got in them so I never repurchased after that.
Eco Tools are 100% vegan! They have a variety of makeup brushes and some of their sets even come with containers and trays to keep them in/on. They also have hair brushes, bath, and spa items on their website!
E.L.F. Cosmetics (eyes lips face) is a fantastic brand because all of their makeup and black makeup brushes are vegan! This does not include all of their beauty products such as face wash and moisturizer, etc. so double check on those things! Elf is very affordable and such a great brand to transition with. You can get a lot of makeup and tools on a budget! They are always having sales on their website as well. The other day they were having a promotion that if you spent $25, you would get free shipping AND a free gift consisting of three items! (Highlighter brush, highlighter/blush duo, and shimmery plumping lip gloss.) They also had an option to get an extra percentage off if you were a student so I did that as well! There are so many things that I repurchase from this brand and I really enjoy their products!
Flower Beauty is a makeup brand by Drew Barrymore. They have a lot of neat things like eye shadow sticks and their packaging is pleasing to look at. I read that they were cruelty-free so I bought an eyebrow kit when they first launched at my Walmart and really liked it, but when I checked again I couldn’t find any concrete proof about their cruelty-free status and I stopped buying from them. I recently just found out that they ARE cruelty-free and I’m definitely going to see if those eye shadow sticks are vegan because they look beautiful! The only ingredients their makeup contains that isn’t vegan are beeswax and carmine, everything else is vegan friendly! Check the ingredients and get shopping!
Milani is a brand that I just never bought from. I don’t really have a reason, I just always passed by it without thought. BUT my Walmart just rearranged their makeup area and made a lot of room for Milani! They have a bigger selection and some really nice shades in their lipstick collections. I am definitely going to check them out! Here is a list for vegan products!
NYX is cruelty-free and they also have some vegan products! My Walmart just started carrying NYX products so i’m really excited that I can get makeup at 2am or whenever I’m buying groceries! Here is a vegan product list!
Physician’s Formula is another brand I’ve never bought from. They have a lot of makeup but I’ve always just known them for their huge bottles of mascara in tubes that look like leaves. I don’t know why I never tried them out though, because I remember reading good things about them when I started being cruelty-free. Maybe I will check them out if they have vegan options!
Piggy Paint looks like little kid nail polish but they have cute colors and small bottles that you can take with you. They are also 100% vegan! I’ve tried their nail polish remover which worked, but you had to scrub more because it doesn’t contain acetone. But that means it also doesn’t stink and is probably actually for kids. I’m still hoping my Walmart will stock the “ghouls wanna have fun” Halloween 3-piece set of polishes because I will actually buy it! Give me spooky nails!
Real Techniques has brushes, brush holders, brush cleaner mats, and brush cleansing gel. I’ve never tried these out but they do have some vegan items.
Wet N Wild is another cruelty-free brand with vegan options! The display at my Walmart states which items and colors of those items are vegan so it’s really easy to shop, but they also have an online list here! They have affordable vegan gel nail polishes and makeup items! They honestly rule!
Here are resources to help you while you shop! You can use these at any store/online. These will help you determine if a brand is cruelty-free and if things are also vegan.
Logical Harmony– Tashina contacts brands to find out their cruelty-free/vegan status so I always know I can trust her list! She is vegan so every product she uses in blog posts/YouTube videos are vegan. She leans more towards makeup but there are non-makeup brands on her list as well. Her list specifies if a brand is vegan and if they have a parent company that isn’t cruelty-free. She also has lists that state whether a brand hasn’t responded yet or if they have confirmed that they are not cruelty-free, so if you can’t find a brand on the cruelty-free list, check the other lists.
Leaping Bunny– This is the list I first started using when I became cruelty-free. They have an app as well if you are into that, but you can also just find their list online! They also have a logo that is on the back of products that they have approved as cruelty-free so it’s a little easier to shop by looking!
Here is a list of non-vegan ingredients! You can also use this list for food shopping! I’ve never come across this website before but it has the longest list out of all of the ones I’ve seen. I usually just Google ingredients I’m unsure about so this list may make it easier to shop!
Thank you for reading and I hope this post has helped you or will help you as you shop for cruelty-free and vegan products! 🙂
